Barbaric is scheduled to hit shelves in June of 2021. But let your local shop know now so you can forget about it, and when it shows up in your pull list it’s like past you got future you a present.

I come into Barbaric with a few things in mind:

  1. Vault Comics is on top of their stuff and if I could easily pull it off I’d have the shop just get me all of their #1 issues
  2. I love fantasy based stuff
  3. The ax’s mouth is dripping blood, so we can assume it doesn’t ask for a well done steak. I’m guessing mid rare at the most

Let’s take a deeper look at this though because there are some really good things going on here.

The art reminds me of old school fantasy comics but done with a more modern execution. I love it. Part of that modern execution is a bit of a dialed up violence level but I’m totally fine with that. Might be a bit much for the kids though, so don’t blindly grab this for them or anything. But I wouldn’t say that it’s excessive at all.

Plus there are plenty of silly little moments spread throughout the story that inject a bit of humor into an otherwise serious story of fighting and bloodshed and fighting.

And do I detect a hint of social commentary? Oh no, looks like politics is slipping into comics again. Can’t have that……… For real though you can’t escape this kind of thing and I’m very thankful for that. I’m actually really looking forward to seeing more of this and I’m being totally serious about this. Barbaric seems like a great series with a sneaky way to slip some of this type of stuff in.

But overall this series just seems like a lot of fun. What’s not to like about a talking ax paired with a barbarian?

Barbarian takes itself exactly as seriously as it needs to, which is exactly what I want in a series like this. I’m definitely looking forward to this one a ton.
