Welcome, fellow gamers and comic book aficionados, to another electrifying episode of Play Comics! This week, we’re diving headfirst into the fiery pits of Hell with Spawn in the Demon’s Hand, the 3D fighting game that brought Todd McFarlane’s iconic antihero to the Sega Dreamcast. Prepare for a wild ride as we explore the game’s demonic delights, from its hellish bosses to its chaotic Battle Royale mode.

Joining us on this infernal journey are none other than Peirce Lydon and George Marston from the podcast Spawnography. These two Spawn scholars will help us unravel the twisted tale of Al Simmons, the military operative turned hellspawn, and his quest for vengeance and redemption. Expect plenty of laughs, deep dives into Spawn lore, and maybe even a few hellish puns along the way.

So grab your chains, summon your necroplasmic powers, and get ready to battle through the underworld with us. It’s time to see if “Spawn in the Demon’s Hand” is a heavenly hit or a devilish dud!Continue Reading

Digging back into the NES days with this one because I somehow missed it. Which in a weird way makes sense because I don’t think anybody that I knew back in the day would have known that Destiny of an Emperor was based on a manga. Or even what a manga was for that matter, but that’s a different issue.

Good thing we have Joey DiCarlo from So Wizard here to help take a look at this early NES RPG. Because we’re both old and can appreciate this one for what it is without wondering why it doesn’t have the sensibilities of a PS4 game.Continue Reading

Sometimes I just get confused when it comes to localization decisions. Why can’t we get the manga license with our games? Did they think we wouldn’t like a plane based shooter because it had a comic with it that we didn’t recognize?

Good thing that I have Steampunk Link and Emmy Zero from SNEScapades here to help straighten things up. Listen in as we try to solve this and other mysterious aspects of this early SNES Era gem.

It’s not often that I’ve seen a comic really follow along an entire family tree. Maybe a bit down the line but generation after generation after generation after….. well, you get the idea. Too bad I’m not a expert on the Jostar family legacy.

Good thing David Weinburger from Shonen Flop who thankfully is all over this one. Things will probably get a bit bizarre.Continue Reading

This is what the rest of the Capcom fighters focusing on Marvel characters was all leading to. One of the greatest fighting games ever made. The reason to own a Dreamcast. The epic mashup of two legendary companies that has no reason to exist in this world but does anyway.

Listen in as Trent Seely from Continuity Nod comes to talk about what is possibly one of the best games every made. Period. End of discussion.Continue Reading

We’re creeping up to the big boys here, this time stopping by Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter. And once again, we get a stripped down version on PlayStation that takes out tag team but at least this time gives you extra modes to make up for it. If that makes up for it is up to you.

Listen in as Justin Williams from SuperTangent joins the show to take a look at Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter and we try not to cry about the lack of Sega awesomeness in our childhoods. Continue Reading

Alright, things are really starting to creep closer and closer to Marvel vs Capcom with a game that finally introduces the concept of Marvel characters fighting against people from a whole different universe. Plus a dose of Japan getting an amazing game that didn’t come out over here and there’s reason why and I’m not salty about that at all. Nope, not one bit.

Listen in as Chris Sims from The ISB comes to talk about X-Men vs Street Fighter and we geek out about X-Men and Street Fighter and fighting games in general.Continue Reading

In the second of our Play Comics Origins series things are taking a different turn. Not only do we have a game that follows a comic story arc, it actually follows the comic story arc. What a concept!Listen in as Scott Niswander from NerdSync comes by to take a look at Marvel Super Heroes which takes inspiration from the Infinity Gauntlet story arc. Like for real, it actually follows the story. Kind of.Continue Reading

It’s finally time to check out the Capcom Fighters, and what better place to start than at the beginning of that run? The X-Men have been a vital part of this show from the start and there’s really no better place to get things rolling here than with a look at a game based on the Fatal Attractions story arc.Well, based on might be a strong phrase. Listen in as Miles Stokes and Matt Hunter from Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men stop by to take a look at Children of the Atom and all of the history and lore behind it.Continue Reading

The Avengers make their return here, this time taking on Thanos in a very loose retelling of the Infinity War story. You know, nowhere near the time the movie was released in theaters or on DVD or anything.

Listen in as Scott Thrower from Fairy Tales for Unwanted Children  joins the show to talk Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems!Continue Reading
