It’s election day on Tuesday, and that means a lot of people are going to get pissed because their candidate or issue doesn’t win.
But that’s not what this is about. Our system is set up so that we have a voice in what goes on. Sure, the system isn’t perfect. I’d love to have one where you have to actually get more than half the votes to win instead of just more than anything else. Or one where third parties actually have a chance. This video from CPG Grey can explain it a lot better than I can.
It amazes me how when people agree with the winners that the system works and everyone should just suck it up pretty much without fail.
The main thing here is that voting is important. Not voting does nothing at all. At least not until we get a real option to abstain. But while we have a majority system like we do now abstaining won’t matter.
TL;DR: Go vote. Let other people vote. Find the flaws in the system and the ways to fix it. Know that local elections are important because things trickle upstream a lot more easily than you’d think.
