Welcome to another thrilling episode of Play Comics, where we dive into the pixelated past and unearth the hidden gems (and occasional duds) of comic book video games! This week, we’re strapping on our stone fists and stepping into the bizarre world of Hellboy: Asylum Seeker—a game that’s as elusive as a chupacabra at a cryptozoology convention.

Join us as we navigate the murky waters of this PS1 survival horror oddity, a game that somehow manages to make Hellboy—a big, red, demon with a penchant for smashing things—feel like a lost tourist in a haunted house. With its fixed camera angles, tank controls, and combat that’s slower than a snail on a Sunday stroll, Hellboy: Asylum Seeker is a curious relic from the year 2000 that has left fans divided. Is it a forgotten masterpiece or the worst PS1 game ever made? We’ll let you decide!

But we’re not braving this asylum alone. We’ve got a special guest, Andrew Young from the podcast Behold!, to help us dissect this digital disasterpiece. Andrew brings his encyclopedic knowledge of all things Hellboy and a sense of humor sharper than Hellboy’s horns (pre-filed, of course).

So, grab your revolver (it might not help much), hold down that attack button, and join us for a hilarious and insightful look at Hellboy: Asylum Seeker. Trust us, this is one episode you won’t want to miss—unless you’re one of those monsters who doesn’t care about getting shot.Continue Reading

Greetings, fellow gamers and digital explorers! Today, we’re strapping on our Digi-Devices and venturing into the world of Digimon – because why catch ’em all when you can DIGITIZE ’em all? W e’re peeling back the nostalgic layers of the PlayStation classic, Digimon World 2. A game where the monsters are digital, the challenges are real, and the memory card space is always at a premium. But wait, there’s more! We’re not content with just battling in virtual arenas and exploring digital dungeons. At least not by ourselves.

Joining us on this wild Digivolutionary ride is none other than Andrew Young, cohost of the podcast Behold! This gaming aficionado is here to share his insights, drop some knowledge bombs, and maybe even settle the age-old debate of Agumon vs. Gabumon. Brace yourselves, because we’re about to unravel the digital mysteries, level up our nostalgia, and possibly discover if Digimon ever learned to change a lightbulb.Continue Reading

The cool thing about comic creators is that they tend to like comics. Which means that whoever your favorite comic creator is probably has a favorite comic. But what happens when you find the source of basically everything? And can you get past the fact that it feels so cliche because it’s the source of all of the cliche feelings?

Listen in as Allen Dunford comes by to talk about his favorite comic, which makes sense because he is a comic creator. But will this game give us an idea of why so many people love the manga? Or will it just rely on having a big sword and hoping that the cool factor there carries us through the story?Continue Reading

Eventually we had to take a look at the world of kids and little monsters that fight. For a lot of people this was their first foray into the world of manga and anime. But we didn’t know that, and we probably wouldn’t have cared at all if we did. There were kids just like us that got to play around with these amazing creatures that we all wish we could have as a pet.

That’s right, we’re talking Digimon with Michael Shea from The Basement Lounge about that show I definitely didn’t try to make you think was that other anime about monsters fighting each other. Which I’m realizing now doesn’t narrow things down enough at all.Continue Reading

There’s no turning back now, social media is here to stay. And with that comes a new type of interaction with the world and the people who make the pieces of entertainment that help us get through our day.

But what happens behind the scenes and along the way for the people who create these things? Good thing we have Dave Baker here to help shed some light on that with Everyone is Tulip, a comic created with Nicole Goux and published by Dark Horse.

Turok was a big thing in the Nintendo 64 era. Big enough to get 4 games on the console. And I’m sure the fact that Acclaim controlled both the game and the comic. So of course you’ve still got all the super well connected aspects of the series.

Listen in as Mike O’Brien from behind the scenes of DC SuperSons as he comes to talk about the final Nintendo 64 entry in the series.Continue Reading

You know what’s always fun? Dinosaurs. Seriously, who doesn’t like dinosaurs? Crazy people, that’s who. So if you can get dinosaurs and aliens and giant guns and it all actually makes sense? How cool is that?

Listen in as Billy who sometimes writes for Commander Cast comes to talk about Turok 2 Seeds of Evil. And cool guns. And the fun of having a comic property published across about a gazillion different publishers.Continue Reading

I know, one of the problems with the show is that the handheld versions of games exist. And that if there’s a console version I tend to just ignore the hand held ones because, let’s face it, are they ever better than the console version anyway? Especially with a series like Turok that’s built around being a first person shooter on a screen that can show really good colors that’s also bigger than 2 square inches. That’s like 5 square centimeters for all of my listeners not in the US.
Blair Farrell from Comic Gamers Assemble is here to help me see if my thought process even has any merit to it as we take a look at 5 different Turok handheld ports and see how they actually play without having to worry about those pesky home console games that always hog the spotlight.Continue Reading

Imagine a world with dinosaur and man existing together except there’s also modern weaponry and plasma rifles and, well, if you’re not convinced now that it’s awesome I’m not sure what’s wrong with you. Also it’s not the Savage Land.

Listen in as Patrick Hickey Jr from Review Fix comes by to talk Turok Dinosaur Hunter and really delves into some of the production behind this classic N64 shooter.Continue Reading

Pretty much everyone dreams of flying. And of not getting on the wrong side of gangsters and Nazis. But mostly of flying. So imagine how cool it would be if a jetpack just fell into your lap! Or rather the seat of your airplane. Oh who care, YOU’VE GOT A JET PACK!

Listen in as Derek Graziano from Rolling Misadventures comes by the show to take a look at The Rocketeer and a pair of games that really couldn’t have been much more different if they’d tried.Continue Reading

In a world of corrupt politicians working with the letter, but definitely not the spirit, of the law it’s inevitable that if time travel become a possibility that it would be used for evil. Which means you’ll have to have cops specifically for time related things.Listen in as Mark Diaz from Mark’s Movie Collection comes to talk about this Jean Claude Van Damme classic and a game that kind of maybe has something to do with it.Continue Reading

Did you know The Mask was a comic? Us either. But somehow Dark Horse got a movie made about a comic that totally slipped past my young knowledge.

But how well did the Jim Carey movie stick to the comics? Listen in as Karrington Martin from Real Dudes Podcast comes back to take a look at this movie tie in game that takes full advantage of Carey’s insanity.Continue Reading
