Sometimes a dumb idea actually turns into something.  You know, like telling your wife that you’re starting a comic publisher. Or not telling her and just kind of doing it until one day neither of you can deny that this is exactly what’s going on.

I’ve never done that. But you know who has? Today’s guest Mark Bernal from Lesser Known Comics. So listen in as I pick his brain about how you can sneaky start a publisher and some of the best parts of doing so as a relative newcomer.

This episode is brought to you in part by Lesser Known Comics. Partly because it just makes too much sense not to do it, and partly because they have a Kickstarter going where you can pick up some print copies of their comics.Continue Reading

There’s only a few things we have to have to survive in this world. Two of those are comics and food. But what if, and I’m being totally serious here, what if you could find a really good comic about food? I’m sure there are others, but Kitchen Witch is really good so that’s what we’re going with right now.

Good thing we have Steve Orlando here to talk to about The Kitchen Witch. Makes total sense since he wrote it. After all, that is how these things usually work. And if you’re not convinced that buying The Kitchen Witch is a good move after listening to this then I’m going to have to seriously think about if we’re able to be friends.

This Episode is brought to you in part by 215 Ink, which makes total sense since they’re publishing it.Continue Reading

More than anything else right now, I want to make sure that everyone one of you is doing alright in every way possible. We’re going through a lot of shit and while taking care of your mental health is really important we as a society aren’t in a place yet where it’s always something that can be talked about openly. That needs to change.

This is one reason why I’m so excited to talk to Justin Richards about his Kickstarter project A Silent Night. Dealing with depression and anxiety is something that you definitely don’t have to do alone. I’m not saying that backing this Kickstarter project will help, but it will get the conversation out into the world in a more public way and I have to see that as a good thing. Plus Justin is just A grade good people. Can’t really go wrong there.Continue Reading

It’s finally happened. I got totally peer pressured into reading a comic. Not only that, but in getting the creators on the show too. Although let’s be real about Witchblood for a minute. I definitely would have read this anyway and thought that I should get the creators on the show. That cover + all the hype I’d seen about this one + Vault Comics = I’ll pick it up. It’s simple math.

Listen in as Lisa Sterle and Matthew Erman (featuring a basically uncredited roll played by their dog) come talk about the creation of a comic about a biker witch from Mars (said only because it fits the reference I’m hoping you catch), working with someone you can’t really get away from, and more of an answer to my standard “Do you have any advice for people looking to get into making comics?” question than I’ve gotten from anyone so far. Not that I’m complaining at all.Continue Reading

I love learning. I love talking to creators about how they get their things done.  I love picking their brains and finding out cool little things. It’s just great.

Enter Chris Sotomayor, the newest member of the PodChris Club. So listen in as we learn what goes into being a colorist and a possible way for you to become one too. Not me though, my art skills aren’t good enough.Continue Reading

You know what my favorite part of doing this podcast has been? Making such talented friends and having an excuse to share their stuff with the world. For real, it’s even better than the comics people give me to read.

For example, I got to talk to Fernando Pinto about a few different things from him that I’m very happy to either have in my house right now or will have some time in the future in Warped and Gun Punch. Both are really fun comics that you should definitely check out.Continue Reading

Chris once again gets sucked in by a creator going out into the world and pushing their stuff. This time it’s the tale of a young bounty hunter and her side quest to find herself. Hurry up and get in on the story by backing Endless Moons on Kickstarter.

Listen in as Tommy Jauregui gives us an insight into Endless Moons, how it came to be, and how you can get yourself a copy of this great story.Continue Reading

Horror and comics just seem to go hand in hand. Horror comics had a large hand in the creation of the comics code many years ago, and it seems like so many people have a secret love and/or talent for horror. So why not have a place where you can let that out without a big commitment?

Enter Steve Foxe, half of the creator team behind Razorblades. Listen in terror as we talk about the creation of a collection of things that go bump in the night, except not anywhere nearly as cheesy as that since Steve is a professional. James meanwhile was not here and may or may not have been tied up in a basement somewhere……….Continue Reading

It’s a thing we’ve all seen before. Post apocalyptic worlds and the groups who rise to power in which to rule them. And it’s something I’ll never really get tired of because all that really means is that you have a fairly familiar stepping stone into a story that can truly go anywhere. That’s what we have here in Scout’s Honor (published by those AfterShock dudes who are trying to take all my money by doing silly things like printing good comics and getting creators who are cool people) and why I’m spending this episode talking to writer David Pepose.

Listen in as I talk to David about how this wonderful book came to be and what drives him to write the way he does. Continue Reading

Comics have  such a long history that there’s no way anybody can know everything about every character. M.O.D.O.K. is that way for me. I have an idea of who this giant killing organism is but only because he’s happened to be in other things.

Good thing I have Jordan Blum, one of the writers on the current mini-series M.O.D.O.K Head Games, on to let me know how much fun this series is (he’s right) and how it’s OK that I really don’t know much going into reading this or watching the TV show due out later this year.Continue Reading

Let’s cut to the chase here. I’m a sucker for creators who I see out in the world pushing their stuff. Rich was out in the world pushing his stuff. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Sea of Sorrows is the kind of thing I’d want to read anyway. Historical horror with a lot of it happening under the sea? Yup, sign me up right now. I even wrote a review you can read here.

So like I said, I’m really excited to have Rich Douek on the show to talk about Sea of Sorrows and how it came to be in this crazy world we’ve had this year. Just a heads up though, there were some screaming child audio issues. I did what I could with those.Continue Reading

I look at comics all the time here in this Creator Talk set of bonus episodes. And I’ve looked at a card game that you play in the real world with actual, physical cards like some kind of caveperson. But somehow I’ve never looked at an actual video game. Until now that is.

Time to get old friend Eric Bailey from Tiny Bookshelf to break through that barrier with his game Octobug. You play as a spider trying to get to the end of levels filled with flies. It’s an old school platformer which reminds me a lot of NES games or computer games from when I was in elementary school. Continue Reading

There are tons of stories about little kids who get to go to other worlds and have grand adventures. Like literally tons, and I’m cool with that. But what I really want to know is how they handled things afterwards. Outside of Peter Pan related things (and Narnia but I think that’s a bit of a stretch) there isn’t really anything.

That’s where Chris Mancini from White Cat Entertainment can help out. Listen in as we talk to Chris about his comic Long Ago & Far Away, which takes a look at what happens when a 30 year old former child hero gets sucked back into the far away world that he helped save long ago.Continue Reading

Let’s get one thing straight. Lonely Receiver is a really fun read. Rye Hickman (previously published as Jen Hickman) and Zac Thompson are really great humans.  Together the make a really good team on a book that you really should be reading. And to have two of the people working on it to come talk about it? That’s really super cool.

Listen in as Rye Hickman and Zac Thompson come talk about where this crazy (in the best way possible) series came from, how they got into comics, and whether they think it’s a good idea to send them pictures of your cats.Continue Reading

We need something wholesome and real life looking and coming of age but also magical. I wonder where we could get something like that right now. Hmmmm, let me think over that one.

Normally I’d ask Sophie Goldstein if she had anything, but I already know that a possible answer here is here recent book An Embarrassment of Witches. Just trust me and go read this one. It’s great, she’s great, show us pictures of your cats.Continue Reading

We’ve already been introduced to the Dark Tunnel from Chris Dreier in the Freaks & Gods comics, but what if I told you that there’s more? And that you could get in on the fun now with just a simple pile of Kickstarter money?

It’s true. Chris has a Kickstarter for Tales from the Dark Tunnel that you really need to check out and throw money at because, like I’ll say many times in the episode, it’s pretty good and the Freaks & Gods comics that kind of go with it are pretty good and Chris is just a cool dude.Continue Reading

We all had toys growing up, and made up stories to go along with them. How do characters from different universes react to each other? Who could conceivably fit in with another toy universe without missing a beat? But most of all, what would happen if you were in that toy universe with them?

This episode we have the Chris Walk half of the minds behind Pursuit of Plastic, a Kickstarter project making a comic that explains exactly that. We also talk about the comic imprint DFAT comics that he and Casey Bowker run to publish their creations.Continue Reading

Giant monsters are everywhere these days. Godzilla movies, Godzilla movie rip offs, you name it. But we also follow either the monsters or the big bad heroes in those stories. What happens with the everyday people like you and me?

Johnny Craft attempts to throw some answers into the mix with his comic Life Under Kaiju. Come listen as we talk about how this comic came to be and his plans for the future of the series.Continue Reading

I’ve always been into history. Alternate history, weird stuff, you name it. There’s a reason why I like the Indiana Jones movies. So you can imagine my excitement when a history based comic came to me about being on the show.

That person was Bryan Soroka with his comic tentatively titled Indefinite Articles. Starting in World War I, this is a great concept and I’m really looking forward to see the progress that this story makes.Continue Reading
